The Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery “CTVS” was established on 1st Jan, 2023 at Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, “SMSIMSR.”

The department comprises of skilled CTVS surgeons, cardiac anaesthesiologists and interventional cardiologists who work together to provide comprehensive care for patients with cardiovascular and thoracic conditions, including paediatric patients with simple and complex congenital heart disease.

Our compassionate healthcare model offers all cardiac services completely free of cost to all including the less fortunate without any discrimination.

The department is set to establish the first free Heart Valve Bank in the Institute, which would be another significant step to alleviate the suffering of patients with cardiac disease.

The department has performed multiple types of open heart surgical procedures including:

– Coronary artery bypass grafting [CABG Off pump and on pump]
– Valve repair/replacement
– Closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects, PDA ligation
– AV Canal defects
– Tetralogy of Fallot complete surgical correction
– Palliative surgeries for single ventricle physiology
– Redo complex surgeries
– Video assisted thoracoscopy surgeries

Some of the important highlights include:

  • Signing of MOU between SMSIMSR and Healing Little hearts Foundation in the United Kingdom, enabling the institute to conduct screening camps, facilitate knowledge exchange and to provide critical care for children suffering from Congenital Heart disease. Two such camps were held recently. One in the month of June, where 31 children underwent open heart surgeries and 14 had congenital cath interventions, providing a new lease of life to 45 children in total. In the recently concluded camp in September 2024, 15 children received the life-saving treatment for their cardiac condition.
  • An exclusive two day CME – IACTS SCORE 2024 was held in the month of March 2024 for Exam going CTVS Residents across the country in collaboration with the Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgeons.
  • First International Conference on Paediatric Heart Valve Repair was held on 19th and 20th July, 2024, which included hands-on training in wet lab sessions for the budding cardiac surgeons. It was a hybrid event attended by nearly 600 delegates across the globe.
  • Establishment of Foetal cardiac unit is being planned, where paediatric cardiologist would perform the foetal echocardiography to diagnose the heart defects in-utero and conduct the antenatal counselling, and such pregnancies and babies would receive comprehensive healthcare with multidisciplinary approach.
  • Multiple outpatient camps are being conducted to create awareness of Cardiovascular diseases and plan  for early Diagnostic and interventional procedures.
  • An international camp was held at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani hospital, Fiji islands where the team performed Adult cardiac surgeries in the month of July 2024.
