Institutional Distinctiveness
The world’s first entirely free medical college for rural students
What makes SMSIMSR distinct from other medical education institutions?
Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (SMSIMSR) is a distinct one-of-its-kind Institution in the world, as it teaches both para vidya (spiritual knowledge) and apara vidya (worldly knowledge), which is the need-of-the-hour in this world driven by commerce. It is an absolute amalgamation of spiritual vedantic knowledge of the East and the state-of-the-art technological advancements of the West.
Thus, the Institutional distinctiveness is exhibited in the following ways:
- Reviving the ancient traditional ‘gurukulam system’ of values-based medical education.
- Mastering the highest ancient wisdom, “May I be liberated from death, so that I am not separated from the perception of immortality” by process of transformation.
- Standing by the philosophy of self-realisation.

Reviving the ancient traditional ‘gurukulam system’ of values-based medical education
If we look back at our great Indian tradition, health, education, and nutrition, were never commercialised and were always provided to the whole community. In these lines, courses in MBBS, postgraduate, nursing and allied health sciences, the Institution aims to revive the ancient traditional system of values-based medical education.
Courses offered are state of the art, compulsory residential programmes, wherein the knowledge is imparted in the traditional ancient ‘gurukulam system’ of values-based medical education. Our Institution will therefore serve to:
-
-
- Avoid exuberantly high, out-of-pocket expenditure incurred by medical students.
- Address the issue of urban-rural divide of the medical fraternity.
- Instil an essence of culture and values amongst medical students.

Mastering the highest ancient wisdom, “May I be liberated from death, so that I am not separated from the perception of immortality” through a process of transformation
This wisdom of “I am not separated from the perception of immortality” (immortal essence pervading everywhere) is embedded in the logo of the Institution, with the purpose that the message of absolute knowledge of ancient wisdom is shared amongst our students, staff, faculty, and patients. To be ready to receive the highest wisdom, the process of self-transformation, of others and the mind is paramount.
For each of the patients that we treat in our Institution, both patients and staff shall have a sense of gratitude. With gratitude, a sense of devotion, not towards any particular God or religion, but devotion towards their own Self. From this devotion shall arise a sense of transformation to be better human beings capable of spreading the divine message, “Love all and Serve all” and instil a sense of love and compassion in all.
Standing by the philosophy of Self-Realisation
“Self-realisation is shedding away the intricate layers of one’s own personality to understand the absolute true nature of reality”
Our institution sees patients as Divine and not less than God. Thus, realisation of this wonderful opportunity that we are Divine and, “to treat the Divine by being Divine”, is the most distinctive feature of our Institution.
This path of self-realisation by the way of selfless health care and medical education will help students to live a life of absolute reality that we are Divine and all are Divine. This is the very purpose of our unique Institution.
